International Literacy Day & The Power of LSRW

Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.
UNESCO · International Literacy Day ThemeDear All,
Today marks International Literacy Day (September 8) — a global reminder established by UNESCO in 1966 to emphasize literacy as a matter of human dignity and fundamental rights. Marking its 60th milestone anniversary under the theme “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity,” today is not just a celebration, but a crucial call to action.
🌍 The Critical Reality We Face
Despite global advancements, education systems worldwide are battling a profound learning crisis. Millions of children in early primary years complete grades without basic comprehension, struggling with a foundation built on shaky ground. When early foundational literacy fails, children do not just lag behind academically — they lose confidence, curiosity, and their right to active participation in society.
🔤 Why LSRW is Non-Negotiable
Literacy is far more than decoding words on a page; it is the natural, sequential mastery of language through LSRW:
Listening
The foundation of language acquisition. Active listening builds auditory discrimination, phonemic awareness, and receptive vocabulary.
Speaking
The bridge to thought expression. Oral fluency converts internal ideas into communication, establishing emotional safety and self-worth.
Reading
The gateway to comprehension. Once sound–symbol relationships are clear, reading transforms simple symbols into meaning and imagination.
Writing
The culmination of literacy. Expressing thoughts visually consolidates cognition, structure, and fine motor synthesis.
When we bypass the natural sequence — demanding early reading or writing before rich listening and speaking experiences are rooted — we create learning gaps that persist for years.
🏡 Our Role in Hauna
At Hauna, our responsibility goes beyond delivering lessons; we design environments where language flows naturally and meaningfully. By grounding our early childhood practice in authentic interactions, rich oral language, and neuro-emotional safety, we ensure every child builds a resilient foundation for lifelong learning.
Let’s use today to recommit to our core purpose: honoring the natural child, prioritizing true linguistic mastery, and ensuring no learner is left behind.
Warm regards,

A journey worth sharing
He is a 5-year-old student of Sahan International School, Nandigram, Purba Medinipur. With his home cut off from the mainland by floodwaters, he first crosses nearly 50 metres of water on an old tyre raft, reaches the other side, and then travels another 8 km by toto to attend school.
At such a tender age, his unwavering determination and extraordinary eagerness to learn are truly inspiring—a powerful reminder that the desire for education can overcome even the greatest obstacles.
